PHS398 Research Plan Component Sections
Items 2-5 of the PHS398 Research Plan component are limited to 15-pages.
Each section of the Research Plan component needs to be uploaded separately as a PDF attachment
HOWEVER it's better to construct the Research Plan component as a single document, separating sections into distinct PDF attachments just before uploading the files.
All attachments must be provided to NIH in PDF format,
Filenames must be included with no spaces or special characters, and a .pdf extension must be used.

Background and Significance

1 page summary of:
a. The total student enrollment at the institution and the number and
percent of underrepresented minorities (e.g., Native American, African American,
Hispanic American, natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands) in the total student
population;
b. Number and percent of underrepresented minority students (undergraduate and graduate) enrolled in the sciences relevant to biomedical and behavioral research;
c. Number and percent of total and underrepresented minority faculty in the sciences relevant to biomedical and behavioral research and the total number of faculty and of underrepresented minority faculty from these departments participating in funded research.

MENTOR:
experienced investigator in the proposed research area is required
must explain the participation of the mentor in the proposed project as it relates to the project and the PI’s development.
mentor should be recognized as an accomplished investigator in the proposed research area and have a track record of success in training research scientists.
mentor should have his/her own research support.
describe how the mentorship relationship will be established and continue during and after the funding period
the activities and indicators of mentorship achievement.
statement FROM MENTOR providing...
(1) information on his/her research qualifications and previous experience as a research supervisor;
(2) a mentoring plan that describes the nature of the supervision and mentoring that will occur during the proposed award period
(3) a plan for monitoring the applicant’s research, publications, and transition to the next step in his/her research career.
Role of the mentor is distinct from that of collaborators and consultants and this should be clearly delineated in the application even if the same individual is serving both roles.
Mentor's biographical sketch is not to be included in this section...
...but in the Research & Related Senior/Key Person Profile Section of the application.
Description of the role of the mentor should not exceed 2 pages and is included in the 15-page limit of the Research Plan.
